What is StepsWeb?
StepsWeb is a NZ-developed literacy programme which caters for every age and literacy level. Your child can log into StepsWeb from home and do the following:
- Work through a structured literacy Course, which will automatically put each learner on the right level.
- Do work which has been set by their teacher using the Assigned Work function.
- Create their own lists for words which they find difficult.
- Learn and practice subject vocabulary.
What do I need to know?
You need to know your child’s username and password.
Please eMail – akonga@taneatua.school.nz to ask for your child’s log on information.
You will need to go to www.stepsweb.com to log in. Your child just clicks on the Login button and enters their username and password. They will then see the screen in this illustration.
The Course button is the red one. Your child will be ‘locked’ into the right place.
The orange button will be grey if there’s no work set, but will go bright orange with an exclamation mark if your child’s teacher has set work.
Just click this!
Is there any written work?
For every list in StepsWeb (on the Course or under Wordlists), you can print out a range of worksheets, including handwriting practice, crosswords, and word searches. Just click the Printables button.
You can also print out a hands-on game called the Stargame. Instructions are included. This is extremely popular with learners of all ages, but particularly useful for younger learners.
You’ll see a video of the Stargame being played here:
What else can I do?
There are lots of options for parents wanting to be more pro-active:
- Create personal lists for your child. This is a link to show you how: https://support.stepsweb.com/126/create-a-personal-list-for-a-student. This is particularly useful if you see errors in their writing or know words which cause them difficulty.
- Encourage them to explore the Wordlists, Supporting Activities and Games sections. Every activity (even Games) is research-based and designed for learning. You can’t really go wrong with this, providing you’re choosing the right level for your child!
You are very welcome to contact us for any help. We’re on 0800 701 107, or info@stepsweb.com. We may be snowed under at the moment, but we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
You can also follow us on Facebook. There are other free teaching activities you can print off from the Support Site and we’re planning on doing a whole range of videos showing parents how to use them effectively. We’ll let you know through Facebook at: StepsWeb – Online Literacy.
Have fun – and keep safe!
